Holistic investigation of shore angler profiles to support marine protected areas management

چکیده

Marine Recreational Fishing (MRF) is growing worldwide in scientific interest, as evidenced by the increasing number of dedicated publications. Studies on impacts and benefits to socio-ecosystems mental health are driving this gradual awareness. In Mediterranean, MRF currently responsible for 10% catches though, context small-scale fisheries decline, it may become dominant. Sustaining activity represents a universal challenge future mankind. However, potential influence anglers' heterogeneity both environment Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE), used internationally evaluate fish harvest stocks indicator, hinders management. addition, little data available onshore fishing, while practitioners increase sharply socio-economic crisis, especially marine protected areas (MPA). We conducted year-round survey 2017–2018 French Mediterranean MPA subject tourist flows, during which 144 anglers were polled semi-directive interviews. typology based technical describe their behaviour diversity its CPUE and, more broadly, multi-species fisheries. characterised four angler profiles, segregated space time, including one identified at risk causing impacts. Our analyses support using total per species independently profiles harvest, except species. seem profiles’ skills self-regulation induce similar yields between absence control. This demonstrates importance taking into account behaviour, each profile could react differently management actions highlights that be detect effect changes regulation framework adaptive results regulations should simplified homogenised national level cooperation with fishing shops co-management promoted.

Marine protected areas and ocean basin management

1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...

Marine trade-offs: comparing the benefits of off-shore wind farms and marine protected areas

The drive to increase renewable electricity production in many parts of Europe has led to an increasing concentration of new wind energy sites at sea. This results in a range of environmental impacts which should be taken into account in a benefit-cost analysis of such proposals. In this paper, we use choice modelling to investigate the relative gains and losses from siting new windfarms off th...

Pragmatic approaches for effective management of pelagic marine protected areas

The dynamic nature of pelagic environments presents unique challenges for management. Despite the sharp increase in the number of marine protected areas (MPAs) with large pelagic areas, or pelagic marine protected areas (PMPAs), little literature exists regarding on-theground approaches to their management, in large part due to the relative newness of many largescale PMPAs. Here we attempt to h...

Special Section: Implementation and Management of Marine Protected Areas

Growing awareness of threats to marine ecosystems has led to the search for new conservation and management tools (Palumbi 2002; Palumbi et al. 2003). Increasingly, attention has focused on integrated ecosystem-based approaches, including marine protected areas. These tools are used to address a suite of goals such as conserving biodiversity, supporting fisheries, protecting natural and cultura...
